O Lagos Jazz foi uma Produção Executiva da Câmara Municipal de Lagos, com Produção de Hugo Alves passando mais tarde à Orquestra. A ideia lançada pela então vereadora Dra. Fernanda Afonso, e continuada pela Dra. Joaquina Matos, deu origem a este Festival com um conceito claro de criar uma semana cheia de Jazz, passando pelas três formas, digamos, importantes: a Performance, o Ensino, e as Jam Sessions. Numa Cidade de Músicos, onde o Jazz manteve presença desde pelo menos 1971 pelo Club de Jazz Navegador, mas também pelo famoso Bar Barimbar, mais tarde pelo Bar Barroca (90's), e, já nesta década de 2000's, já era o Stevie Ray's que seguia essa tradição, e com Jazz ao Vivo. Poderíamos recuar ao início do século XX, e aí teríamos uma famosa banda de baile, as jazz bands estavam na moda, o "Império Jazz Lacobrigense", banda que já incluía esse novo instrumentista apelidado de "jazz bandista", que não era mais nem menos que o baterista, e esse instrumento novo que o Jazz introduziu: a bateria. O Festival, na sua Programação teve o conceito de trazer Artistas diferenciados, com estilos diferenciados, por forma a formar públicos, a servir de "mostra", e sempre contando com projetos nacionais. A nível do Ensino, eram convidados anualmente cerca de 7 professores, de renome nacional e/ou Internacional, que davam 3h de aulas diárias, teóricas e prácticas, sendo que no último dia do Festival era feita uma performance dos alunos, seguida de outra dos professores. Não foi incomum a ligação com os Professores da ESMAE - Escola Superior de Música e Artes do espetáculo, do Instituto Politécnico do Porto. Passaram nestes anos mais de 300 alunos, que assim descobriam esta linguagem musical e a improvisação. Mercê desse despertar, talvez, alguns seguiram Estudos Superiores e são hoje Músicos na área do Jazz e outras. Outros seguiram vias de Composição, recolhendo inclusivamente Prémios. Todas as noites, terminavam com monumentais Jam Sessions no Stevie Ray's, espontâneas, que invariavelmente duravam até altas horas da madrugada. Ainda recebemos mensagens e interpelações sobre este Festival, que deixou saudades, e que nos parece ter marcado gerações. Foi da edição de 2004 que nasceu esta Orquestra. Lagos Jazz was an Executive Production of the Municipality of Lagos, with production by Hugo Alves later passing to the Orchestra. The idea launched by then Culture Councilor Dr. Fernanda Afonso, and continued by Dr. Joaquina Matos, created this Festival with a clear concept of creating a week full of Jazz, going through three important forms: Performance, Teaching, and Jam Sessions. In a City of Musicians, where Jazz has been present since at least 1971 by the Jazz Club Navegador, but also by the famous Bar Barimbar, later by Bar Barroca (90's), and, in the 2000's, it was already Stevie Ray's that followed that tradition, and with Live Jazz. We could go back to the beginning of the 20th century, and then we would have a famous local dance band (jazz bands were in fashion) the "Império Jazz Lacobrigense", a band that already included this new instrumentalist nicknamed "jazz bandista", who was no longer even less than the drummer, and that new instrument that Jazz introduced: the drums. The Festival, in its Programming, had the concept of bringing different Artists, with different styles, in order to form audiences, to serve as "exhibits", and always counting on national projects. In terms of teaching, about 7 teachers of national and/or international renown were invited annually, who gave 3 hours of theoretical and practical classes daily, and on the last day of the Festival, a performance was given by the students, followed by another by the teachers. The connection with the Professors of ESMAE - Superior School of Music and Performing Arts, of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto, was not uncommon. More than 300 students passed through those years, who discovered this musical language and improvisation. Thanks to this awakening, perhaps, some followed Higher Studies and are now Musicians in the area of ​​Jazz and other musical areas. Others followed the path of Composition, even collecting Awards. Each night of the festival ended with monumental Jam Sessions at Stevie Ray's, spontaneous, which invariably lasted until the wee hours of the morning. We still receive messages and inquiries about this Festival, which we all miss, and which seems to have marked generations. It was from the 2004 edition that this Orchestra was born.
