Algarve Jazz Orchestra ENG

It was 2004, when this Jazz Orchestra was founded within the framework of the Lagos Jazz Festival. A classic Big Band, as in the style of the Great Orchestras that Jazz gave us from the ends of the 20's, namely by the hands of Fletcher Henderson, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Count Basie and Duke Ellington. This would not be a simple project to implement. This Orchestra was created with the sole support of the Municipality of Lagos.

Hugo Alves is the founder of the project, a trumpeter of recognized national and international credits, who, in addition to being a musician, musical director and producer, holds the academic Title of Specialist Professor (Phd) in Jazz (Polytechnic Institute of Porto, 2013), along with a degree in Business Management (University of Algarve, 1996). Lagos Jazz was already one of his productions, raned for ten years, and which did put Lagos on the European Jazz Map.

The Orquestra de Jazz do Algarve was, from the outset, a project with a clearly defined strategy, based on three pillars, which are still fundamental in the development of its activities today: Music on Stage, Educational Service, and Production. The project, considered by many to be unique on a national level, grew, and grew on all fronts. It is today one of the national projects in the music area, which receives most grants and support, as a result of its recognized activity: since 2006 it has had the support of the General Directorate of Arts - Ministry of Culture, currently with a Sustained Support (2023-2026), and is directly supported the majoty of the 16 Municipalities that make up the Algarve Region, with special emphasis on the Municipality of Lagoa, which gives us the Artistic Residency. It also gathers other private supporters. The Orquestra de Jazz do Algarve holds all possible official recognitions: Public Utility, Cultural Patronage, Declaration of High Cultural Interest, to name a few.

The Orquestra de Jazz do Algarve has partnered with various public and private entities, such as the 365 Algarve Program managed by the Algarve Tourism Board, which for example allowed the production, from 2017 to 2020, of the Algarve Jazz Gourmet Moments Festival , the biggest event of its kind in the Region since the Allgarve Program, which combined the concept of regional gastronomy, the Gourmet concept, and Jazz. Other similar events are running, such as Beliche Jazz (Sagres, Vila do Bispo), Cachopo Jazz (Cachopo, Tavira), among others.

The course of these 19 years of activity has allowed us to collect an enviable accolade of international renown Artists, having welcomed great names in World of Jazz: Rick Margitza, Tom Harrell, Benny Golson, Silge Nergaard, Dena DeRose, Tutu Puoane, Silvia Donati, Max Ionata , Andrej Olenijack, Florelie Escano, among many others. Or even the no less important national musicians or residents here: Vânia Fernandes, Paula Oliveira, Jeff Davis, Michael Lauren, Maria Anadon, Ana Rita Inácio, Kiko Pereira, Sara Miguel, Clara Buser, Mário Delgado, Desidério Lázaro, Ana Laíns, Cherry, to name a few. The lists, on one side and the other, would be long. Alongside all these Musicians and Artists, diverse repertoires were created and recreated, many of them originally, which, in addition to stimulating national creation, put on stage sounds that time insists on erasing, and also create new recordings on CD.

This is how this Orchestra is seen, and the reason why, despite bearing the name of a Region in its designation, it makes it a National project. Founded and residing in the Algarve, but still a national Good, in favor of the Portuguese Culture, and its dissemination. We are a professional structure, with more than 16 musicians, and about 24 people in its total crew, full functioning.

In terms of Audiences, in recent years, the average lotation is over 98%, with registered annual audiences of more than 32 thousand people (data from oficial DGArtes Reports).
